Meeting with AWA – Association of Women Ambassadors

On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2024, The Diplomat’s Cabinet had the privilege of joining an insightful and thought-provoking meeting hosted by the Association of Women Ambassadors (AWA) in Portugal. The event, led by Ambassador Élise Racicot of Canada, featured Professor Margarida Garcia, Co-director of the Leadership Academy at the University of Ottawa, for an informal yet powerful discussion.

The central theme of the gathering was “What are the self-imposed mental barriers that hinder women's personal leadership development?”—a question that sparked deep reflection on the social, cultural, and psychological factors that often limit women in leadership roles, including diplomacy.

Professor Garcia shared her expertise in leadership development, shedding light on the unconscious barriers women may face and the strategies to overcome them. The discussion was open, candid, and constructive, encouraging attendees to engage in a meaningful dialogue about personal and professional growth.

As an advocate of the power of leadership, particularly women’s leadership, The Diplomat’s Cabinet contributed to the debate by highlighting the obstacles faced by young women.

This meeting was yet another example of the crucial importance of political and diplomatic-level conversations aimed at advancing women’s roles in leadership.
